They’ve always been great value, but there’s an amazing generation of “poshtels” that are so stylish they put many hotels to shame.

A prime example is Palmers Lodge in London’s Swiss Cottage, a Victorian listed building which was once the London home of biscuit magnate Samuel Palmer, of Huntley & Palmers fame. Described as a “boutique hostel”, this place feels grand and traditional in its public areas – there are leather armchairs and a stuccoed ceiling in the lounge, hunting scenes on the walls, and a suit of armour halfway up the grand oak staircase. Its private rooms, however, are trendy and quirky in design…
